What is Building Information Modeling (BIM)?
The two videos below summarize the key aspects of BIM.
BIM National Strategic Roadmap
In June 2021, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) published the Advancing BIM for Infrastructure – National Strategic Roadmap document. Through this document, FHWA articulates a vision and proposes a roadmap of structured activities to advance BIM for Infrastructure in the United States. Using this roadmap, FHWA proposes collaborating with stakeholders on a shared vision, goal, and objective to facilitate BIM for Infrastructure implementation.

BIM at NYSDOT
NYSDOT has invested in and is an active participant in the research efforts for the FHWA-led BIM for Bridges and Structures (TPF-5(372) and BIM for Infrastructure (TPF-5(480)) pooled fund initiatives. These pooled fund studies are a collaborative multi-year effort involving more than (30) DOTs to develop national standards, guidelines, and open-data workflows for 3D modeling and managing transportation infrastructure assets throughout their lifecycle. NYSDOT is furthering it’s BIM maturity by leveraging an Advanced Digital Construction Management Systems grant to implement the products generated by these two pooled funds. We invite you to learn more about BIM through the websites and artifacts created by both Transportation Pooled Funds.
